195-Mile Odyssey

Yes We Are Crazy Team celebrates in "Gangnam Style" (we were told there was video but it may have been destroyed).

On October 12, several OIT members competed in the 3rd Annual Southern Odyssey Relay Run Adventure as part of a large, enthusiastic team of runners and support staff.

Beginning in Chickamauga, GA and finishing near Marietta, the race was a 195-mile, 12-man relay race. Each person ran between 13-21 miles depending on their skill level, running in 7-9 mile sections. The event lasted over 35 straight hours and the OIT-led team, called "Yes We Are Crazy", finished second in their classification!

Yes We Are Crazy included runners James Alston (Enterprise Services), Felicia Bianchi (PMO), Mark Eisert (Integration), Karilena Meyer (R-WIT), Kaven Moodley (Enterprise Applications), Jason Stanaland (Infrastructure), and Trisha Wilson (PMO). Navigators and drivers included Marisa Benson (PMO), Susan Greene (PMO), Farah Remtulla (PMO), and Garrett Southwell (Enterprise Applications).

One of the cool things about the race was that they were able to crash at Susan's house in Rome.

For more information about participating as a runner or volunteer, contact Eric Lerude at eric@odysseyrelays.com.

Collins Gets Creative, But Hall Gets Last Laugh

Gerry Hall's cubicle with some UGA flair.

One of the great things about college football rivalries is that good-natured ribbing often spills over in the workplace, especially at a place like Emory, where nearly every football-playing alma mater is represented in the workforce. The Friday before this year's SEC Championship Game, Steve Collins (Integration) and some unnamed pro-UGA conspirators playfully decorated Gerry Hall's (Integration) cubicle for the occasion.

Friday evening, Gerry, an Alabama fan, received an email with the pictured photo that read, "Now that you're home, I wanted to let you see your cube. It's going to look like that all weekend."

But, as often happens in rivalry games, Gerry had the last laugh, as Alabama defeated Georgia, 32-28, in a nail-biter for the ages. "Ten more seconds and UGA would have won," said Steve. "I'm certainly glad that there were not ten more seconds!"

No word on where Emory's football team currently ranks.

Will this fit in my laptop bag?

Guess what this is?

Hint: The picture was taken 56 years ago.

Answer below...

It's a hard disk drive back in 1956...with 5 MB of storage. In September 1956, IBM launched the 305 RAMAC, the first 'SUPER' computer with a hard disk drive (HDD). The HDD weighed over a ton, measured around 16 square feet (6.5" tall), and stored a 'whopping' 5 MB of data. Do you appreciate your 32 GB memory stick a little more now?

Charlie Brown Tree

"We'll decorate this little tree and it'll be just right for our play. Besides, I think it needs me." - Charlie Brown

Just inside Tommy Barwick's (Enteprise Services) 1762 office, there is a little cedar that has been affectionately named by members of Field Services as the Charlie Brown Tree.

Decorated with tiny candy canes made from jumper wire used to connect circuits all over campus and adorned with a star made from a silver gum wrapper, the live tree came from a property that Tommy owns in Oglethorpe County.

Tommy plans to plant his little tree after the holidays.
